When former New York Giants star receiver Plaxico Burress gets released from prison stemming from gun charges two years ago on Monday, the world of football will finally have something else to deliberate and talk about. With the Giants portraying that they have no intentions on trying to resign the receiver, the other 31 teams in the league will have a shot at landing him. The question is who will give Burress a shot at making their squad once the lockout finally comes to an end? Here are some teams who could use the services of this once dominant receiver.
Oakland Raiders
Coming off a rebound year where the Raiders secured their first non-losing record since their 2002 Super Bowl appearance year, the Raiders need help at wide out. With a very young team (especially at offense) they could use Plaxico to help mentor the younger receivers. He brings Super Bowl experience and a winning pedigree, which could inevitably be the missing piece for an AFC West division title and perhaps even more.
Carolina Panthers
After posting up a 2-14 record in 2010, the Panthers need a lot more than just a receiver, however it is a good start. With an offense whose only real weapon is the speedy Steve Smith, Carolina could use Plaxico’s size to have another option at the slot receiver spot. Picking up Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton with the top overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, nothing would aid his confidence more than a proven receiver with a huge target. Carolina could become an instant threat, with the chance of scoring on every snap of of the ball.
Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens already possess two receivers in Anquan Boldin and Derrick Mason that provide a solid receiving core for up and coming star quarterback Joe Flacco. The acquisition of Plaxico Burress could instantly land Baltimore in the conversation of Super Bowl contenders. Baltimore has been missing that one piece of the puzzle to bring the Super Bowl home, and this could be that piece.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles are a “wild card” team in this conversation. Although not necessarily needing a receiver, the Eagles might have the best shot at landing Plaxico. Having taken a chance with Micheal Vick after he was released from prison, the Eagles are not afraid to give a former star a chance to prove himself. Vick and Burress also have a long history stemming back to their days growing up together in the Virginia Beach area. Depending on the shape Plaxico shows up in to training camp, he could become a major threat to defenses in a already stacked NFC East.
