Top 10 Sports Rivalries of All-Time

by Mathew Frederick

Over the next 10 days, I will expose my list of the top ten rivalries of all-time, one rivalry per day. All of these match-ups could easily be at the number one spot on anyone’s top 10 list, so make sure to check back everyday to see your top rivalry make the list!

#10. New York Knicks vs Indiana Pacers

-Having met in the playoffs 6 times from 1993 to 2000, this match-up was one of the most anticipated contests in the Eastern Conference year in and year out. Led by the 2 arguably best players in each franchise history, Reggie Miller and Patrick Ewing, these teams made sure to leave everything they had on the court and held nothing back.

#9. Los Angeles Dodgers vs San Francisco Giants

-This is a story of two teams. Two teams that overcame constant adversity, world war I & II, and a racial barrier that tore a whole nation apart. Meeting head-to-head for a total of 2,158 times, and a 3000 mile relocation from a cold and gloomy east coast to the much sunnier and warmer west, this rivalry is definitely one that cracks all top 10 lists.

#8. Army vs Navy

-Dating back to the 1940’s and 50’s, the Army/Navy game often had national title implications. However, college football “powerhouses” now a days have a better shot at recruiting top high school prospects due to the fact that serving 4 years for your nation upon graduation is not required. This has really impacted the significance of this contest. Unfortunately, the last time these two teams faced off and had winning records in the same season was 1996.

#7. Dallas Cowboys vs Washington Redskins

-What was once a small dispute between two highly regarded business men in the nation, quickly turned into one of the most heated rivalries two sports teams have ever had for one another. These two teams have combined for a total of 33 divisional championships, 8 Super Bowl titles, and 30 pro football Hall of Famers. When it comes to financial statistics, these two teams rank amongst the top. Forbes Magazine has them ranked as the #1 and #2 most valuable franchises is all of professional football. So who are we talking about here? Two of the most storied NFL organizations ever, the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins.

#6. Texas vs Oklahoma

-The year was 2005. The electricity in the stadium was at an unbelievable level. The hype that the game had received was unlike anything these two programs had ever been apart of. However, for these 2 teams 100th meeting in the history of their programs, only one was ranked in the AP Top 25. That team, the University of Texas, came into the game in the number 2 slot of the poll, and they were on a mission to prove that the road to the BCS National Championship ran through Austin. With Texas freshman running back Jamaal Charles leading the Horns, Texas easily destroyed Oklahoma 45-12. Texas finished the regular season undefeated, and later went on to win the championship.

#5. Montreal Canadians vs Boston Bruins

-You can’t have a top 10 rivalry countdown without mentioning 2 of the “Original Six”. “Original Six” obviously meaning the first 6 franchises ever to grace the ice of the National Hockey League. The two teams that I’m talking about, the Montreal Canadians and the Boston Bruins. These two teams have faced off against each other in regular season play more times than any other two NHL franchises have faced off period. After Battling that many times, it’s hard to find two other rivals with this type of heat that could literally melt the ice.
