Chicago…Back on Top?

by Mathew Frederick

The NFL Combine has finally came and went, free agency has started, and the next big event coming up in about a month and a half is the NFL Draft. Some teams feel like they already have what it takes to make a strong run at the Super Bowl, others know better than that. So which team has really made some bold moves in order to get there name mentioned among championship contenders? Well, that would have to be the Chicago Bears.

The Bears let the world know just how serious they are about being a top contender this year by signing the #1 overall free agent this years market had to offer, Julius Peppers. Friday morning, Peppers signed a 6 year contract with the Bears worth $91.5 million dollars with $42 million coming guaranteed. If that wasn’t enough, the contract could be worth a lot more if Peppers were to make the Pro Bowl or become Defensive player of the year.

Having spent the first 9 years of his existence in the league with the Carolina Panthers, Peppers felt that it was time to part ways with the team that drafted him out of the University of North Carolina. Peppers’ numbers in Carolina were good enough for him to be named to the Pro Bowl 5 times. With the Panthers struggling mightily last season, the separation with Peppers will likely not aid in the rejuvenation of the squad. Carolina needs a lot of help, and must make moves quick if they want to bounce back from last years 8-8 record.

The Bears, meaning business, have also had other key off season acquisitions over the past 48 hours. Needing help in the run block game, the Bears signed one of the best in the league in former San Diego Charger TE Brandon Manumaleuna to a 5 year deal. Following that was the signing of Adrian Peterson’s back up in Minnesota, RB Chester Taylor. Both star plays will add another degree of potency to an already dangerous Chicago offense.

So with the key additions in Chicago, the Bears believe that they have put themselves in a position that will enable them to make a run for the championship, or at least a playoff spot. The city of Chicago does not tolerate a 7-9 record, and the Bears staff knows this. So with these off season moves, have Bears management done their job with giving Head Coach Lovie Smith the weapons needed to have a successful season? Only time will tell
